R. Gabrielle McCormick

Over the weekend, I had a chance to attend the Taste of Dallas event at Fair Park. I must say the food was delicious and reasonable! As I walked around deciding between friend macaroni and cheese and roasted corn, I began to notice the lines at booths. Some lines literally spilled over into walkways, while other vendors had no one.

As I continued walking around, I noticed that the vendors with long lines normally were telling others about their food. When someone walked up, they had a conversation with them and made suggestions about what they should try. You could tell that they had prepared their food with love and were communicating that love to everyone in attendance. Their long wait lines attested to their ability to speak for their food.

When you communicate from the heart to your audience, people listen.

Don’t be afraid to express passion, hurt, frustration, fear, triumph, and any other emotion that depicts your story. Those scholarship essays are the ones that capture and hold the reader’s attention because they are so honest. Speak from the heart and let the committee do the rest.
